The Equestrian team is gearing up for the upcoming season of competition. They will be led into the show arena this year under four strong leaders. The 2010-11 captains for the Fresno State Equestrian team are Jill Tebbe, Maddison Silver, Caitlin Marshall, and Kimberly HewsonBudnik. All four ladies bring a great amount of experience, leadership, and hard work to the team.
This will be Jill Tebbe's second year as team captain and
her fourth year competing on the team. Jill
competes in the Western Reining discipline and has definitely made her mark in
that arena. Last season she competed in
13 events and earned eight wins and an MVP honor against University of South
Carolina. She earned two MVP honors in
her previous season against University of South Carolina and University of
"My favorite part of being on the team is the great friends that I have made. Everyone on the team is really fun and we all have a good time," said Tebbe. "All my roommates have been from the team and some of my best friends are girls that were/are on the team with me. I also like getting the opportunity to ride in college and travel all over the country doing what I love."
Tebbe will be a senior this year, so this will be her last season of competition for the Dogs. Joining her as the Western co-captain is Madison Silver. This will be Silver's third year on the Equestrian team and her first year as team captain. She competes in the Western Horsemanship and has done an outstanding job in her collegiate career. Last season she competed in 13 events and earned eight wins, one tie, and two MVP honors against University Tennessee-Martin and Sacred Heart University. She received her highest career score of a 77 in her opening match against New Mexico State last season.
"Being on the team has definitely taught me time management," said Silver. "Being able to juggle workouts, class, practice, and taking care of our assigned team horses has really taught me how to schedule my time."
Both of the English captains are brand new to the role, but are ready for the responsibility and bring a lot of knowledge and experience to the team. Caitlin Marshall is a senior and has competed all four years in the Equitation on the Flat. Marshal earned MVP honors against South Dakota State during her sophomore year and she had a high average competition score of 77 last season. She is ready to make her final season one to remember.
"It is really important to stay in shape both on and off the horse," said Marshall on how she prepared for the season over summer. "Riding and working out regularly are both important aspects to having a head start towards a good season."
Joining her as the English co-captain is junior Kimberly HewsonBudnik. Hewson has competed in the Equitation on the Flat events and done very well. Her freshman year she went 9-6 and earned three MVP honors. Hewson also achieved a big win over the defending national champion team Georgia at the Varsity Equestrian National Championships in 2009. Her team gave her the award of English Rookie of the Year for all of her accomplishments in her first year as a student-athlete. She took a break from competing her sophomore year to focus on school. HewsonBudnik is ready to be back in action this season and get back into the competition arena.
"I have prepared for the upcoming season by riding as many horses as I could over the summer," said Hewson. "I also rode with some different trainers to get different opinions and to fine tune my riding style."
The Equestrian team will have their first home event of the
season on Saturday, September 25, at the Student Horse Center. Admission is free and this event will be the
day that the Equestrian team celebrates the centennial season.
