Jan. 31, 2012
FRESNO, Calif. -
More than 60 former Fresno State female student-athletes and coaches from the 1970s and 80s returned to campus Saturday, Jan. 28 to celebrate National Girls and Women in Sports Day and began the year-long celebration of the 40th anniversary of Title IX.
The festivities began at the Smittcamp Alumni House, where a dinner reception was held for all the honorees and their guests. It was a time to share stories, an opportunity to reminisce and a chance to catch up with former teammates and peers.
For the past three years, Fresno State Athletics has celebrated National Girls and Women in Sports Day (NGWSD), a day that brings national attention to the achievements of female athletes of the past, present and future throughout the country, by honoring former female student-athletes and providing a free clinic for children.
Fresno State has a rich history of women's sports participation, even preceding the implementation of Title IX in 1972. To recognize the foundation these former female student-athletes have created Fresno State Director of Athletics, Thomas Boeh and Deputy Director of Athletics, Betsy Mosher attended the reception to speak along with several other Fresno State faculty members.
The tradition continued when the former female student-athletes were recognized during the halftime show of the women's basketball game against Hawai`i Saturday night. Current Fresno State female student-athletes were matched up with former female student-athletes and coaches to walk them out onto the court. Each honoree was introduced in front of the 3,500 people in the crowd, recognizing their name and sport. Then in a ceremonial moment the current Bulldogs handed over personalized awards to the former Bulldogs that stood in front of a standing ovation.
Additionally, as a part of the NGWSD festivities, the Fresno State athletics department will host a free sports clinic for children on Saturday, Feb. 4 at 10 a.m. Student-athletes from women's golf, swimming and diving, volleyball, women's tennis and soccer will teach participants a variety of skills from their respective sports.
