May 1, 2007
Fresno, Calif. - For the 17th year, the Fresno State athletics department will be holding the Torch of Excellence dinner on Monday, May 7 at 6 p.m. at the Radisson Hotel in Downtown Fresno. The Torch of Excellence honors Fresno State scholar athletes, including Robin Mackin, a sophomore pitcher on the softball team.
Mackin will be one of 249 scholar athletes honored for having achieved a GPA of 3.0 or better for the spring and/or fall semesters of 2006. The dinner will also welcome parents, Kiwanis representatives and athletic department, university and community guests.
"Robin is the true meaning of the word student-athlete," Assistant Athletics Director for Student-Athlete Services Dr. Susan Gutkind said. "She is passionate about school and softball and is very driven."
The night will feature dinner, awards presentations, video tributes and guest speakers, while hosted by Ralph Wood from KMPH Fox 26.
Earlier this year, during halftime of a men's basketball game, Robin Mackin was featured on a segment called "Making the Grade". Mackin is a 4.0 scholar athlete, a recently declared Biology major, who has been on the dean's list every semester since joining Fresno State from Newmarket, Ontario, Canada.
