FRESNO, Calif. - Wednesday on the Fresno State campus is Traditions Day and the Fresno State Athletic Department is recognizing one of its long-standing traditions by paying homage and honoring former Bulldog coach Jim Sweeney with the release of its Bulldog Spirit Campaign.
Sweeney, who spent 19 seasons as head coach of the Bulldog football team and is the programs all-time winningest coach, established the moniker `Bulldog Born. Bulldog Bred.' that many of the sport programs still use to this day.
"Bulldog Spirit is alive and well," said Kevin Sweeney. "Our Dad came here in 1976 to awaken a sleeping giant. We are proud that his legacy carries on."
Current Bulldog head coach Tim DeRuyter has vowed since the day he was hired in December of 2012 that he would honor the players and traditions that helped build this program. Last season, DeRuyter reintroduced the Bulldog Spirit song which the team sang in the locker room after every victory.
"We've got such a great tradition here with coach Sweeney and coach Hill. I think that song epitomizes winning, being in the locker room and can really connect our communities, both from our past and with our current players," DeRuyter said. "We want to always bring our alums back and make them feel that this is a part of the program because they built this program. By having that common song, I think it is a great connector for generations of Bulldogs."
During coach Sweeney's tenure, which spanned from 1976-77 and again from 1980-96, he would belt out with his teams the Bulldog Spirit song that he created.
"Almost every day and for sure after every game, we sang that fight song," said Chris Pacheco, managing member of One-Putt Broadcasting that owns Fresno State's flagship radio station, 940 AM ESPN Radio. Pacheco played under Sweeney in 1984 and 1985, earning first-team All-PCAA accolades both seasons.
"To hear that song come back brought back so many amazing memories, but more importantly the emotion and love one has for your old teammates and coaches," Pacheco added. "This song brings so many Bulldog teams back together, to have a common bond of knowing that your BULLDOG BORN, BULLDOG BRED, GONNA BE A BULLDOG TILL THE DAY I AM DEAD!"
After Fresno State defeated Rutgers in the 2013 season-opening victory, the Bulldogs sang Sweeney's fight song in the locker room which you can see here in this video.
Coach Sweeney passed away in February of 2013 and the Bulldog Football team wore a `JS' sticker on their helmets last season in his honor.
"We are so very proud of our history and a big part of Fresno State Athletics was what coach Sweeney built in his many years here," Senior Associate Athletic Director Paul Ladwig said. "The Bulldog Spirit song galvanizes the community and instills a sense of pride in both the community and on campus. We have set out to captivate that pride and love for Fresno State by bringing back this song and making it a part of our athletic team, campus and community."
One of the Red Wave's favorite memories of coach Sweeney is when he led the Bulldogs to the victory over USC in the 1992 Freedom Bowl, and with the Bulldogs set to open up this season against the Trojans on Saturday, there is no better time to rally the troops with his Bulldog Sprit.
In the third quarter of games at Bulldog Stadium this season, the Bulldog Spirit song will be shown on the video board with the word for the Red Wave to sing along with. The same will be done at all Fresno State events for the Red Wave to sing along with.
Bulldog Spirit Lyrics
I got that Bulldog Spirit up in my head, up in my head, up in my head I got that Bulldog Spirit, up in my head, up in my head to stay.
I got that Bulldog Spirit deep in my heart, deep in my heart, deep in my heart I got that Bulldog Spirit, deep in my heart, deep in my heart to stay.
I got that Bulldog Spirit down in my toes, down in my toes, down in my toes I got that Bulldog Spirit, down in my toes, down in my toes to stay.
I got that Bulldog Spirit up in my head, deep in my heart, down in my toes I got that Bulldog Spirit, all over me, all over me to stay!!!!
