FRESNO, Calif. ---In an effort to give back to the community, Fresno State student-athletes are taking action. The Fresno State Student Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) is putting on a canned food drive this weekend at all of the home athletic events to help support the Poverello House.
The first event for fans to donate at will be Fresno State's volleyball match this Thursday, Sept. 27, at 7 p.m. against New Mexico. Student-athletes will be collecting canned food donations at stations located inside the Save Mart Center entrances.
SAAC members will be back in action on Saturday, Sept. 29, accepting donations at the football game as the 'Dogs take on San Diego State in the first-ever Mountain West game. The Red Wave can make donations while entering Bulldog Stadium at the North, South and East gates.
The last opportunity to donate will come on Sunday, Sept. 30, at the Fresno State soccer game in Bulldog Stadium at 1 p.m., as the 'Dogs begin Mountain West play against Air Force.
All fans who make a canned food donation will receive a coupon for free tacos at Jack in the Box restaurants.
Comprised of at least two student-athletes from each team, SAAC is the leadership group of the student-athlete population. Besides being the voice of student-athletes, SAAC plays a critical role in the community service done by the student-athletes. The committee creates many projects for the student-athletes to partake in and in the past, the community service emphasis was on "youth at play" within the community.
Moving into the Mountain West, SAAC has recently decided to bring an emphasis towards collecting for those in need, specifically collecting canned foods for the Poverello House.
