FRESNO, Calif. – Fresno State head softball coach Linda Garza announced the addition of Justin Shults to her coaching staff on Monday. Shults, who played baseball for UC Riverside and professionally in the Houston Astros organization, brings four years of collegiate softball coaching experience to the Bulldogs. Â
Â
"Justin's work ethic, passion and success make him the right fit for Fresno State," Garza said. "He brings a baseball mind combined with a softball background and uses these two experiences to maximize player development. Justin's focus from day one will be to work directly with our offense and assist in recruiting the right student-athletes to win championships. I'm excited to have him work with our student-athletes and see Justin emerge as one of the top offensive coaches on the West Coast."
"I am extremely excited to be joining the Bulldog coaching staff," Shults said. "Being able to come into a program with as much tradition and prestige as Fresno State is truly an honor. I look forward to being a part of the continued success for the softball program and university."
Â
Shults comes to Fresno State following two seasons as assistant coach/recruiting coordinator at Miami University in Ohio, where he helped guide the RedHawks to back-to-back 30-win seasons, a Mid-American Conference Tournament Championship and an NCAA Tournament berth in 2016. Shults' on-field duties focused on hitting, infield and gameday defense.
Â
Prior to his time at Miami, Shults spent two seasons as assistant coach at Southwestern Oklahoma State, where he mainly assisted with hitting, outfield and recruiting. He helped guide six players to earn spots on the All-Great American Conference Team.
Â
As a baseball player, Shults spent one season in the Houston Astros organization after a highly decorated playing career at UC Riverside, earning 2010 All-American and All-Region honors as a junior. He was also a two-time All-Big West selection.
Â
Shults earned his bachelor's degree in psychology from UC Riverside in 2011 and his Master's of Education in sport management from Southwestern Oklahoma State in 2013.
