Josiah Norville comes to Fresno State after stints at Coffeyville Community College, Western State Colorado University and Baylor.
FRESNO, Calif. – Fresno State head track and field coach Scott Winsor announced the hiring of Josiah Norville on Thursday. Norville will be responsible for coaching sprints, hurdles and jumps.
Â
"I'm excited to have Josiah join our Bulldog track and field staff," Winsor said. "His enthusiasm, energy and knowledge of the events put our sprints, hurdles and jumps in good hands. Those same qualities will make him a very effective recruiter as well. With his event groups being a major focal point of our program, I believe he is more than ready, willing and able to meet the challenge. They have already responded in a very positive way to his style of coaching."
Â
Norville spent last season as the sprints/hurdles coach and strength and conditioning coach at Coffeyville Community College. During the 2016 indoor and outdoor seasons, Norville coached 22 All-Americans, 33 national qualifiers, three regional champions, 18 first-team all-regional selections, 19 conference champions, 28 first-team all-conference selections and one USATF Junior Nationals qualifier. Five school records were also set by his student-athletes.
Â
A year earlier, Norville held the same position at Western State Colorado University where he coached six provisional national qualifiers, 17 all-conference selections, including nine first-team honorees, and one USATF Junior Nationals qualifier. The Mountaineers won both the 2015 indoor and outdoor men's Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference championships.
Â
Prior to Western, Norville served three seasons as a volunteer assistant coach for Baylor University. He assisted associate head coach Michael Ford in coaching the short sprinters and short hurdlers. Norville worked with top NCAA Big 12 athletes, helping many of them reach All-American and All-Big 12 honors. He also assisted nine NCAA qualifiers in five events. Norville also helped the director of operations with day-to-day business in the track and field offices. Â
He earned his bachelor's degree in biology/exercise science at Illinois College in Jacksonville, Ill., where he was a seven-time All-Midwest Conference selection and a two-year team captain. He was the Midwest Conference 110-meter hurdle champion in 2010 and currently holds the Illinois College record in the 55-meter hurdles, 60-meter hurdles and 4x200-meter relay.
In May 2014, Norville received his master's degree in exercise physiology with a specialization in strength and conditioning from Baylor.
Along with his work with Baylor, Norville was a personal trainer at the Waco Gold's Gym and also worked for Team Speed in Jacksonville, Ill., in 2011.
