Sophomore earns first trip to the NCAA Championships with an eighth-place finish in the javelin on Thursday at the NCAA West Preliminary Round.
AUSTIN, Texas – In her second trip to the NCAA West Preliminary Round, Vanja Spaic became the first Fresno State javelin thrower to qualify for the NCAA Championships since 2007. With her third attempt of the competition on Thursday at Mike A. Myers Stadium, the sophomore landed a mark of 159'-6" (48.63m) to solidify her place in the top 12 to earn the berth.
Â
Spaic's qualification comes 10 years after four-time NCAA qualifier and three-time All-American Mallory Webb last reached the championships for Fresno State, the last javelin thrower to do so for the Bulldogs. The women's javelin at the NCAA Championships will be contested on June 8 (5:45 p.m.) at Hayward Field in Eugene, Ore.
Â
With three other Bulldogs competing on the first day of the Preliminary Round, Annemarie Schwanz advanced to the Saturday's quarterfinal of the 1,500 meters. Finishing third in the third of four heats with a time of 4:28.66, the senior is now one race away from reaching the NCAA Championships for the second consecutive year.
Â
The last Bulldog of the day to finish was Maja Pogorevc. In her first appearance at the regional, the sophomore finished sixth in the opening heat of the 400 meters with time of 54.80. Aisiah Tuiasosopo began the regional for Fresno State in the morning in the hammer throw. The junior finished the event in the 37th place with best mark of three attempts coming in at 183'-7" (55.96m).
Â
