Fresno State Water Polo Staff to Hit the World Stage

FRESNO, Calif. – Fresno State water polo will get some early exposure in the international realm as coaches Natalie Benson and Caitlin Haskell are set to be on staff with USA Water Polo in the coming weeks. Benson will be at the Junior World Championships (Sept. 3-9 in Volos, Greece) while Haskell will travel to the World University Games (Aug. 18-30 in Taipei, Taiwan).
"I am proud to be on staff for the Junior World Championships again this year, as it is a great opportunity to work with some of the best athletes in the country and prepare them for an opportunity to compete for a spot on the senior team," Natalie Benson said of the opportunity. "It's incredibly rewarding to work with Coralie [Simmons] and Betsey [Armstrong], as they both have been teammates of mine, and we can share our experiences with athletes that will move on to continue the legacy of USA women's water polo."
Benson already has quite the international résumé as a coach having led her Huntington Beach Water Polo Club team to a gold medal in the Junior Olympics in 2011 and silver medals in 2012 and 2013. She also served as the head coach for the 2013 USA Water Polo Women's Cadet National Team where she led the squad to a gold medal at the UANA Pan American Youth Water Polo Championships in Argentina.
Caitlin Haskell is also excited about her upcoming opportunity with USA Water Polo.
"I'm extremely honored to represent Team USA as an assistant coach at the World University Games. Assisting Dan Klatt and working alongside Serela Kay will be a learning experience I'm looking forward to," said the Fresno State assistant. "I also look forward to working with some of the best athletes in the nation that have represented Team USA a number of times. The legacy of Team USA is unmatched and to be a part of it is incredibly rewarding."
Haskell, like Benson, has coaching experience overseas and with USA National Team programs. From 2011-13, Haskell served as an assistant coach for the USA National Development Team. She also spent time with SOCAL Water Polo, one of the top club teams in the country, from 2011-14 where she was instrumental in leading the squad to top finishes in the Junior Olympics and the TYR Cup.Â
The wealth of experience that Benson and Haskell have with the top teams in the nation will only help them in building Fresno State's program from the ground up in 2017-18 alongside newly hired assistant coach Kate Kammer.
