FRESNO, Calif. – Fresno State totaled 17 runs and 18 hits, including two home runs, a double, and three triples from sophomore Miranda Rohleder, in a pair of dominant wins on Saturday on the second day of the Bulldog Classic. The 'Dogs defeated Pacific 10-5 and one-hit Saint Mary's in a 7-1 victory.
Fresno State (6-3) improved to 3-1 on the weekend with one more game to play on Sunday. The Bulldogs hit .327 in two games on Saturday while holding the opposition to a .173 batting average. Freshman Danielle East took a no-hitter into the fifth inning against Saint Mary's and allowed just one unearned run to pick up her fourth win of the season.
How it Happened (Pacific game)
The Bulldogs jumped on Pacific starter Hailey Reed early, scoring six runs in the first two innings. With two on and two out in the first, Hayleigh Galvan drove in the first run of the game with a single to center and a second run would score on the play as the ball got under the glove of the Pacific center fielder.
In the second inning, the 'Dogs loaded the bases with nobody out on hits from Dominique Jackson and Schuylar Broussard and a walk from Kaitlyn Jennings. Rohleder brought all three runners in on a triple to right center and she would come in from third on a Vanessa Hernandez RBI single.
Pacific got two runs back in the third, loading the bases with three straight singles and scoring runs on a walk and a hit-by-pitch. In the bottom of the fourth, Rohleder hit her second triple of the game with one away and scored on a Katie Castellon RBI single. Pacific then committed errors on three consecutive plays with Galvan driving in a pair of runs to extend the Bulldog lead to 10-2.
Fresno State was two outs away from ending the game via the run rule in the top of the fifth before Sydney Lahners hit her fourth home run of the tournament, a two-run shot, to cut the lead to 10-4. Pacific got another run in the top of the 7th and had the bases loaded with one out but Samantha Mejia shut the door to earn her first career save.
How it Happened (Saint Mary's game)
Fresno State scored early vs. Saint Mary's as well as Castellon hit her third home run of the season on a deep drive to center field with one away in the bottom of the first. The Gaels had just one base runner over the first three innings, and in the bottom of the third Broussard hit a leadoff home run before Rohleder tripled again and scored on a Castellon fielder's choice ground ball.
The 'Dogs moved to a 6-0 lead in the fourth inning, scoring three runs on just one hit – a 2-run pinch hit single from freshman Hailee Rios, her first career hit – with a walk, hit batter, and Saint Mary's fielding error. East had not allowed a hit with two away in the fifth inning, but after a Bulldog error put a runner on second base Dylan Linton broke up the no-hit bid with an RBI single to right.
That was Saint Mary's only hit and run of the game. Fresno State added a run in the sixth as Rohleder singled for her fourth hit of the day, stole second, moved to third on a Saint Mary's throwing error, and scored on Castellon's third hit of the day, an RBI single. Mejia finished out the win for the second time on Saturday, facing the minimum over two scoreless innings.
