FRESNO, Calif. – Tiffany Kennedy-Cummings allowed just two unearned runs over 6.1 innings and Hayleigh Galvan delivered a two-run double in the third inning to lead Fresno State to a 3-2 victory over Saint Mary's to conclude play at the Bulldog Classic on Sunday.
Fresno State (7-3) defeated Saint Mary's (0-10) for the second consecutive day following a 7-1 win over the Gaels on Friday night. The Bulldogs went 4-1 over the three-day tournament as Fresno State pitchers combined for a 1.48 ERA and .210 opposing batting average during the tournament.
How it Happened
With strong wind blowing in from center field throughout the game the conditions were ripe for a low scoring contest. The teams combined for just one hit through the first two innings, and in the top of the third Saint Mary's had two singles but stranded both runners.
In the bottom of the third, Miranda Rohleder opened the inning with a triple, her fourth three-bagger in the last two days (three games). Katie Castellon followed with an RBI single, and after a Vanessa Hernandez single moved Castellon to third Galvan split the gap in right center to bring in both runners.
Armed with a 3-0 lead, Kennedy Cummings cruised through the first six innings, allowing just three singles and striking out five. Schuylar Broussard had a leadoff double in the bottom of the sixth and the Bulldogs put runners on second and third with one out but could not add to their lead.
In the top of the seventh, the first two Gael hitters reached on an error and a single. A walk would load the bases with one out and a Bulldog throwing error on a ground ball allowed two runs to score. Freshman Danielle East entered with the potential tying run at second and just one away. She got a groundout, which moved runners to second and third with two out, then struck out Nikki Alexander to end the game and earn her first career save.
Notable
"It got a little interesting in the end today for Tiffany but I thought she did what she needed to do. She got the groundballs and put us in positions to get outs. I wish I would have seen a little bit more from our offense, because I think we are capable of more runs, and I'd like to see us use this opportunity to develop and put our foot on the gas pedal when we have chances. We had a lot of runners in scoring position that we didn't capitalize on."
On the Bulldog Classic…
"I'm glad we were able to pull out the W's and get the wins that we needed. Walking out 4-1 is a good result. I tip my hat to UC Davis and the pitcher (Brooke Yanez) – somebody that walks in with a sub-one ERA is doing very well so I take that as a quality loss. We won four games and found ways to get on top. We're still developing and we still are a team that's a work in progress and the goal is to get to a place that we can compete for a conference title."
What's Next
The Bulldogs will play five games next week at the Mary Nutter Classic in Palm Springs. Two of the team's opponents are ranked among the top seven in the nation (No. 5 UCLA and No. 7 LSU) while the 'Dogs will also play BYU, which was ranked No. 19 in the preseason, and CSUN next weekend after beginning the tournament Friday at 10:30 a.m. against Wisconsin.
