Four Bulldogs recorded wins on Saturday evening as the Fresno State wrestling team fell at home to Stanford, 27-15.
FRESNO, Calif. - Four Bulldogs, including two of the first three, recorded wins on Saturday evening as the Fresno State wrestling team fought hard at home against Stanford falling to the Cardinal, 27-15 at the Save Mart Center.
Leading the way for the 'Dogs was sophomore Josh Hokit at 197 pounds as the dual-sport athlete recorded his second fall of the season pinning David Showunmi in 5:45.
Other Bulldogs to record wins in the dual was redshirt sophomore Richie Brandt at 184 pounds, 19th-ranked redshirt sophomore Khristian Olivas at 149 pounds and redshirt sophomore Isaiah Hokit at 165 pounds.
"We saw some real encouraging things from certain guys tonight and fought tough," said head coach Troy Steiner. "We will continue to improve as we head towards March and look forward to competing at Oregon State on Monday."
With the dual beginning at 174 pounds, redshirt sophomore Dominic Kincaid got the Save Mart Center energized racing out to an early 6-1 lead against No. 9 Keaton Subjeck after the first period using a takedown and a four-point near-fall to build an early lead before adding three escapes in the second to hold a 9-5 lead going into the final period. A two-time NCAA Championships qualifer, Subjeck battled back to tie the match at 10-10 forcing overtime where he was able to secure a takedown of Kincaid in 0:34 to win 12-10.
The 'Dogs followed up that setback with a pair of wins as Brandt used a first-period takedown and a third-period escape to hold off Austin Flores, a Clovis native, for a 3-2 win at 184 pounds. With the dual tied at 3-3, Hokit built a 4-2 lead after two periods before using a turn in the third period to record the fall over Showunmi to give the 'Dogs a 9-3 lead in the dual.
Stanford would go on to win the next four matches, including two by fall, to take a 21-9 lead in the dual before Olivas ended the run with a 8-3 win over Jake Berry at 149 pounds. Olivas jumped out to a 4-0 lead after a quick reversal to start the second period, but Berry responded with an escape and takedown to make it a one-point match. The Bulldog recorded the final four points of the match to secure his 24th win of the season and move to 16-1 in duals.
The dual wrapped with the older Hokit brother also notching a win racing out to a 6-1 lead after a second-period reversal and held on for a 9-4 win over Jared Hill.
Only the third loss ever by the 'Dogs to the Cardinal in 36 duals between the two programs, Fresno State will look to respond on Monday evening traveling to another Pac-12 foe Oregon State (3-5, 0-1 Pac-12) for a 7 p.m. dual at Gil Coliseum.
