BOISE, Idaho - The Fresno State women's track and field team captured three wins and set four personal records on Saturday in what was an outstanding trip for the Bulldogs to the Bronco Classic.
"This was a very successful trip to Boise for our team," said head coach Scott Winsor. "Having set four personal records, getting three wins and two second place finishes, just a great weekend overall."
Breeauna Thompson shined as she set personal records in the 60-meter and 200-meter dash. Thompson won the 200 with a personal-best time of 24.27 seconds. She placed second overall in the 60 with a personal-best time of 7.61 seconds, it was the top collegiate time in the event.
Newcomer Shakira Lewis also set a personal record in the 200-meter clocking a time of 25.03 seconds, good for fourth-place. In the 60-meter, Lewis crossed the line with a time of 7.73 seconds right behind Thompson for a third-place finish overall.
"[Breeauna] is a very good role model for [Shakira] in her preparation for these events," said Winsor. "From the moment she steps off the plane to the moment she crosses the finish line she is preparing to compete at her highest level."
The fourth personal record set on Saturday was in the long jump competition by Je'Nia Sears. Sears posted a 6.06-meter (19-10.75 feet) jump; it was the best collegiate jump at the Bronco Classic and second-best overall. Sears bested her 5.83-meter (19-1.50 feet) jump at the Air Force Blue and Silver Open in Dec., an event in which she won.
The other big winner Saturday was Meagan McKee in the throwing events, McKee won both the shot put and weight throw competition. In the shot put, Mckee posted a mark of 14.88 meters (48-10.00 feet) and in the weight throw she finished with a best throw of 18.89 meters (61-11.75 feet).
"[Meagan] got back on track today," said Winsor. "She wasn't happy with her results in Dec. last time out and to bounce back with a double win is great for her."
As a team in the weight throws, the Bulldogs dominated the event having three of the top four throws on Saturday. Following McKee was Caitlin Byrd in second-place with a 17.26 meter (56-07.50 feet) throw. J'Quyra Moncur-Blue took fourth-place with a 16.72 meter (54-10.25 feet) throw.
"I know Blue wasn't too happy with her results," said Winsor. "But the good thing is, the team did well as a group and that is what they set out to do today."
In distance events, Meagan Paracholski finished sixth overall in the 800-meter clocking a time of 2 minutes, 14.84 seconds. In the 1-mile run, Stella Kubasch got her collegiate career started with a time of five minutes, 9.69 seconds which placed her eighth out of 32 runners.
