COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. -- Fresno State opened up competition at the Indoor Mountain West Conference Championships and sits in fourth place in the team standings after their first day.
In the long jump, defending conference champion Je'Nia Sears finished second. The junior from Fresno jumped 19 feet, 11 inches (6.07m) to secure the second place finish. New Mexico's Aasha Marler won the event with a jump of 20'-05" (6.22m).
Fresno State had a strong day in the weight throw. Senior Meagan McKee improved her spot from the prelims with a throw of 64'-04.5" (19.62m) to finish fourth. Junior Caitlin Byrd launched a lifetime best throw on her final throw of the championships to finish fifth overall and find a place on the podium. Byrd's throw of 63'-00" (19.20m) pushed her from ninth to fifth.
The Johnson sisters both had a strong day in the 400-meter. Kyra Johnson and Dezirae Johnson each qualified for the 400 final tomorrow. Dezirae qualified second with a time of 55.42 seconds and Kyra qualified fourth with a time of 56.27.
Sophomore Shakira Lewis was another Bulldog to qualify for a final tomorrow. She will run in the 60-meter dash final after running a 7.51 to qualify second. The time was a career-best for Lewis and was just .04 seconds off of the school record.
After scoring 22.5 points on the opening day of the championships, the Bulldogs sit in fourth behind New Mexico, San Diego State and Wyoming.
