IRVINE, Calif. -- Fresno State opened competition at the UC Irvine Spring Break Invitational on Friday and the men sit in fourth and the women are in fifth in the overall team standings after day one.

Redshirt senior Roderick Dash had a career day. He posted a throw of 60.06 meters to finish second in the hammer throw and in the process, set a new career-best mark. His previous best throw came in 2012 when he tossed the hammer 58.18m at the Brutus Hamilton Open.

In the men's 3,000-meter Steeplechase, senior Kevin Poythress finished in 9:24.05 to finish second. He was just four seconds behind UC Irvine's Tommy Newton-Neal.

Competition continues tomorrow morning at the Anteater Track Stadium.
