IRVINE, Calif. -- The Fresno State track and field team saw individuals break two meet records and the women's team take home a fourth place team finish at the UC Irvine Spring Break Invitational on Saturday afternoon.
Je'Nia Sears jumped just over 20 feet (6.10 meters) to break the previous meet record of 19 feet, 11.5 inches that was set by Jbomi Maduka of Cornell in 2007. Sears has now won each of her outdoor events this season. The junior from Fresno has the top mark in the Mountain West and is ranked fourth in the nation early in the outdoor season.
Junior thrower Brice Sandri launched the discus 181-05 (55.29m) to set a new personal record and also a new meet record for the UCI Spring Break Invitational. The distance was good to put Sandri fourth on the all-time list for Fresno State. He also ranks first in the Mountain West and moved up to No. 17 in the nation in the discus throw.
Other winners on the women's side on Saturday were Kyra Johnson in the 400-meter hurdles. The sophomore ran a 59.96 to trim three tenths of a second of her winning time from last weekend. The Fresno State 4x400 women's relay team of Johnson, Njeri Omawahleh, Sears and Dezirae Johnson won with a time of 3:44.68. The time gave the women the top 4x400 time in the Mountain West.
The Bulldogs went 2-3 in the triple jump. Senior Fabrina Espinoza jumped 38-07.50 (11.77m) to finish second and freshman Tiere Simpson finished third with a leap of 38-02 (11.63m).
On the men's side, junior Devin Harrison had a solid day. He finished second in the long jump with a distance of 24-03.75 (7.41m). He also finished fourth in the 200-meter dash and was a part of the 4x100 relay team that finished fourth.
Next weekend, Fresno State will have athletes at both the Texas Relays in Austin, Texas and the Cal Poly Invitational in San Luis Obispo, Calif. The Texas Relays start on Wednesday, March 26 and the Cal Poly Invitational begins on Friday, March 28.
