Ayala and 'Dogs Continue to Shine

FRESNO, Calif. - The Fresno State track and field team earned strong performances at the Cal Poly Invitational with nine first-place feats and a host of season-bests, highlighted by another stellar showcase by senior thrower Sharon Ayala. Ayala opened the meet on Friday by tossing a season-best and another NCAA Regional qualifying mark with a dominating hammer throw of 205 feet, 4 inches (62.61 meters) to win the event. "Sharon is getting better and better," head coach Scott Winsor said. "She is gaining so much foot and ball speed. She's going to hit an even bigger one here in the next few weeks." Sophomore Cara Montes earned a tie for second in the pole vault by surpassing the 12-7.5 bar (3.85m). Sophomore Courtney Castaneda added a third place finish in the women's long jump by leaping 18-5.25 inches (5.62m). Seniors DeAnte Brown and Erik Fossen finished third and fourth respectively in the men's long jump. "Erik got the two rolling with an early big jump," Winsor said of the tandem. "DeAnte is coming off injury and those two did a great job." Later, Brown and Fossen leaped to a 1-2 finish in the men's triple jump with respective marks of 49-4.5 (15.05m) and 48-11 (14.91m). Sophomore Jacqueline Vazquez threw the javelin 125-11.25 (38.39m), the second longest throw of the weekend.
Junior Peter Krumeich won the men's javelin competition with a mark of 195-8.75 (59.66m).
"Peter is getting consistent and learning how to win," Winsor added. "He's going to toss an even farther one here soon." Freshman Justin Cutler earned the third-best mark in the men's shot put by recording a season-best 51-6 (15.70m) throw. "That's a very good performance by Justin," Winsor said. "He's been throwing well in practice and is just a big, strong kid who's going to continue to get better." Fossen later cleared 6-6.5 (2.00m) in the high jump event. Ayala also won the collegiate competition in the women's discus throw by registering a 165-9.25 (50.53m) mark in a strong cross/head wind and finished second overall behind the reigning Olympic gold medalist in the event, Stephanie Brown Trafton. Junior Tim Greene sent a soaring 161-6.5 (49.24m) discus to lead the male competitors. Sophomore Elijah Carrillo delivered a solid performance in the men's 3,000-meter steeple contest by recording a time of 10:00.52. Senior Evan Young cruised to a 15.04 mark in the men's 100 hurdles to win the event while senior Vanessa Sautebin finished second among the women with a 14.07 sprint. The `Dogs earned the top three finishes in the men's 400 as Darryl Miller blistered the field by going 48.56 seconds, followed by junior Val-Pierre Dai'Re (49.35) and sophomore Kendrick Young (49.51) Junior Roxanne Sellick finished the fastest of the college student-athletes with a 4:31.00 in the 1,500, just under nine seconds faster than the second-place finisher, Lauren Mulkey of Cal Poly. Freshman Shanelle Stephens bolted to a second-place finish in the women's 100 dash at 12.25 seconds. The Bulldogs scored a pair of third-place finishes in the 400 hurdles as freshman Cody Alves sprinted to a 55.38 mark in the men's event and sophomore Annie Bledsoe finished in 1:12.11 during the women's event. Dai'Re earned the best time in the men's 200 dash at 21.55 and teammate Durran Moore came in third at 21.88. The Bulldogs return to action next weekend (April 10-11) at the Sun Angel Track Classic in Tempe, Ariz.
