Track And Field Hosts Weight Pentathlon

    FRESNO, Calif.- The track and field squad will compete in the fifth annual Fresno State Weight Pentathlon on Saturday, Jan. 11 at Warmerdam Field. Events are scheduled to begin at approximately 10 a.m. and continue through the early part of the afternoon, time permitting.

    The Weight Pentathlon features competition in events such as hammer, javelin, shot put and discus. Fresno State male and female athletes will compete throughout the day, with additional participants hailing from Sacramento State, Cal State Bakersfield, Cal State Stanislaus and Fresno Pacific, along with a handful of unattached entrants.

    Highlighting the scheduled competitors for the men are juniors Joe Vasquez and Shlomi Ben-Shushan. Vasquez, one of Fresno State's top throwers from a year ago, was the team leader in the shot put category last year with a 53-8.25 mark. Ben-Shushan was tops in the hammer with a distance of 199-0.

    On the women's side, senior Lisa Krauter spearheads a trio of Bulldogs to watch. Krauter finished with top marks of 37-11 (shot put) and 148-7.75 (discus) during the 2001-02 season. Joining her will be freshmen Marie Taumua and La'Sha Hill.

    Fresno State opens the 2002-03 season when it competes in the National Pole Vault Summitt in Reno, Nev., Jan. 17-18.

    MEN
    10 a.m.- hammer (cage)
    11 a.m.- discus (outside ring)
    12 p.m.- 20 lb. weight (cage)
    1 p.m.- shot put (sector)
    2 p.m.- javelin (runway)

    WOMEN
    11 a.m.- hammer (cage)
    12 p.m.- discus (outside ring)
    1 p.m.- 35 lb. weight (cage)
    2 p.m.- shot put (sector)
    3 p.m.- javelin (runway)
