FRESNO, Calif. - Fresno State men's and women's track and field will travel south to the USC Trojan Invite March 18-19 in Los Angeles. The Dogs will compete at USC Loker Stadium - Cromwell Field with field events beginning on Friday at 10 a.m. and running events beginning Saturday at 9:30 a.m.
THOMPSON EARNS WAC HONORS
Breeauna Thompson was named the Verizon Western Athletic Conference Women's Outdoor Track and Field Athlete of the Week, respectively, for the week of March 7-13. Thompson, a sophomore from Fresno, Calif. (Edison HS), won both the 200- and 400-meter dashes as Fresno State hosted Cal Poly last weekend. She took first place in the 200-meters with a time of 24.83 seconds, and clocked a personal-best time of 55.29 in the 400-meters. Her victories earned crucial points to help the Bulldogs win the meet, 100-97.
DOGS SPLIT WITH CAL POLY
The Fresno State men's and women's track and field team hosted Cal Poly for their first and only home meet of the season as the women were victorious in a close meet and the men lost a close battle. Both teams had student-athletes set multiple personal records. Freshman Meagan McKee led the way with a first place finish in the hammer throw. McKee's winning throw was marked at 179-11 (54.84m) and was also a personal best. She heaved a second victory in the discus event with a mark of 144-01 (43.92m). Breeauna Thompson had two victories in the sprint races. She sped to first place finishes in both the 200- and 400-meter dashes. Thompson clocked a finish of 24.83 in the 200- and 55.29 in the 400-meter dash. For the men, a standout performance came from Remington Blair who clocked a 47.32 in the 400-meter dash and a first place finish. Blair was also the anchor to the 4x400-meter relay team. The junior was passed the baton 10-meters behind and ran him down to come from behind for first place.
OUTDOOR TRACK HAS STRONG SHOWING
The 2011 men's and women's track and field team opened the season for the second straight year at the Cal Outdoor Opener which featured the host Cal Golden Bears, Stanford, UC Davis, Fresno State, San Francisco and Cal Poly. In the men's sprints, Cameron Parker had a strong showing, finishing in second in the 100-meter and the 200-meter. On the women's side, Rosario Sanchez won the shot put with a throw of 15.28-meters. Sanchez won the WAC Indoor shot put title last week with a throw of 15-31-meters.
