Track And Field Hosts First Outdoor Meet Saturday

FRESNO, Calif.- Fresno State track and field will host its first meet of the outdoor season Saturday afternoon at Warmerdam Field, matching up against Mt. San Antonio College and Bakersfield College.
The event is set to begin at 10 a.m., with the women's hammer throw kicking off the day's competition. The men's side will feature all three schools, while the women's competition will include just Fresno State and perennial junior college powerhouse Mt. San Antonio College.
The Bulldogs opened their outdoor campaign with an impressive showing at last weekend's Cal Poly Invitational at San Luis Obispo. Sophomore Crystal Phillips (Long Beach, Calif.) was the only Fresno State entrant to register two first-place finishes on the afternoon, winning the 100- and 200-meter runs with times of 11.86 and 24.35, respectively. Also notching top-honors for the women was junior Kara June (Santa Maria, Calif.) and senior Bergann Hernandez (Turlock, Calif.) June led all competitors in the 3000-meter steeplechase with a mark of 10:32.96, while Hernandez won the pole vault when she cleared 12-06.00.
On the men's side, Fresno State collected six first-place finishes. The Bulldogs, which also garnered the best time in the 4x400-meter relay at 3:14.70, were led in the running events by sophomore Reggie Allen (Fresno, Calif.) and Phil Ogilvie (Clarksburg, Calif.). Allen took first in the 400-meter run with a time of 48.68 and Ogilvie was the leader in the 3000-meter steeplechase at 9:27.37. Sophomore Russell Weaver (Clovis, Calif.) continued Fresno State's pole vaulting success this year with yet another first-place finish, winning the event at 4.90m.
Tomorrow's meet will serve as a precursor to the 75th annual Bob Mathias Fresno Relays, which begin on Thursday, April 3 with the small high schools competition.
