FRESNO, Calif. - Fresno State track and field is sending 11 student-athletes to the NCAA Preliminary Round Championship in Austin, Texas (May 24-26). Western Athletic Conference Champions Devin Harrison (long jump), Justin Lovingood (triple jump), Latrisha Jordan (400m hurdles) and Meagan McKee (shot put) are joined by Jordan Walker, Olivier Bernard, Remington Blair, Emmanuel Jackson, Breeauna Thompson, Je'Nia Sears, J'Quyra Moncur-Blue, Christina Cabias and Caitlin Byrd.
Thompson is the only women's WAC sprinter who qualified for multiple events. She will compete in the 200m and 400m dash prelims.
WAC CHAMPIONSHIPS RECAP
Fresno State had one of its best overall performances this season on both the men's and women's side at the Western Athletic Conference Championships (May 8-11) with a combined eight championship titles and 30 medals. Devin Harrison was named WAC Freshman of the Year after winning the long jump and earning a second gold medal as a member of the WAC Champion 4x400m relay team. He also earned silver with the 4x100m relay team. Other big individual winners included Jordan Walker and Latrisha Jordan. Walker was a member of the championship 4x400m team with Harrison and also won silver in the 4x100m and 400m races. Jordan won the 400m hurdles for the third time in four years. She also picked up two silver medals n the 100m hurdles and as a member of the 4x100m relay team.
LAST TIME IN THE PRELIMINARIES
J'Quyra Moncur-Blue was the only Bulldog to qualify for the regional event in 2011. She finished 17th in the hammer throw with a 56.61 mark. The men have not had a qualifier since 2008.
MCKEE AND BERNARD TAKE HOME TOP HONORS
Sophomores Meagan McKee and Olivier Bernard were given the top honors at the 2012 cross country and track & field awards banquet Thursday night. The pair were named Bulldogs of the Year and Student-Athletes of the Year for their respective areas. This is the second year McKee has won the top Bulldog honor.
HARRISON RECEIVES SYSCO WEEKLY AWARD
Freshman Devin Harrison of the Fresno State men's track and field team was named Fresno State Sysco Student-Athlete of the Week, the organization announced Monday. He became the first Bulldog in program history to be named Western Athletic Conference Men's Outdoor Track & Field Freshman of the Year after earning two gold and one silver medal at the Championships.
MOVING UP THE RANKS
Several Bulldogs worked their way into the record books this season. Newcomers include Meagan Paracholski (800m), Je'Nia Sears (long jump), Christina Cabias (javelin) and Caitlin Byrd (hammer throw). J'Quyra Moncur-Blue holds two of the top three hammer throw marks in program history and Meagan McKee is now second on the 'Dogs shot put list. Olivier Bernard and Derek Oliver are newbies to the record book on the men's side. Bernard is eighth in the 1500m and Oliver is ninth in the javelin.
BULLDOGS IN THE WAC AND BEYOND
Fresno State is ranked in the top five in 26 events and holds the number one spot in seven across the WAC. Two Bulldogs rank top 25 regionally. Sophomore Meagan McKee is 14th in the shot put and junior J'Quyra Moncur-Blue is 21st in the hammer throw.
