Aug. 6, 2008
FRESNO, Calif. - The US Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association named five Bulldogs to the 2008 All-Academic Track & Field Teams Wednesday. Sarah Savage, Roxanne Sellick and Grace Wiesmann each earned the honor for the women. Chris Witscher and Frank Sanders were recognized for their achievements this season. "What these student-athletes have achieved is what Fresno State track and field wants to be all about," said head coach Scott Winsor. "We want the best of both worlds, the athletic and academic, and these student-athletes prove it can be done." To qualify for the USTFCCCA All-Academic Track and Field Team, the student-athlete must have compiled a cumulative grade point average of 3.25 and have met either the NCAA Division I Indoor automatic or provisional qualifying standard or the NCAA Division I Outdoor regional or national qualifying standard in their respective event. Savage, a freshman pole vaulter, qualified for the NCAA Regional by clearing 12 feet, 7.5 inches (3.85m). Junior thrower, Wiesmann, reached the regional mark with a hammer toss of 178-1 (54.29m). The lone track athlete for the women, Sellick, had a qualifying time of 4:27.44 in the 1,500-meter run to cap off her junior season. Witscher's hammer throw of 187-4 (57.10m) qualified him for his second NCAA Regional, to earn his second Academic All-American honor in his final season with Fresno State. Sanders, a sophomore, ran a conference-best time of 1:50.08 in the 800 to earn a bid to the regional.
Four of the athletes will return for the 2009 season. Join the State - Fresno State! |
