Garcia Captures Men's Title, McPhail Leads Women
Sept. 22, 2007
FRESNO, Calif. - Freshman Erick Garcia continues to prove he belongs. The native from Parlier, Calif., won the 8K race at the Pepperdine Invitational, finishing with a time of 24:25 and beating UCLA's Evan Watchempino by one second for the title. Last week, Garcia finished second at the Sacramento State Hornet Jamboree, but was the first collegiate competitor to finish.
Garcia and the Bulldogs were fourth out of 10 teams, Saturday in Malibu, Calif. Sophomore Frank Sanders kept pace, finishing 13th overall with a time of 25:19. Freshman Elijah Carillo followed in 24th place with a time of 25:54 while sophomore Brandon Geis came in 35th with a time of 26:12. Senior David Vartanian was 62nd with a time of 27:20. UCLA won the team title.
"Erick can run with the best of them," head coach Joe Gonzales said. "Frank broke 26 minutes again and I'm really proud of Brandon, he just gets stronger every week."
The women's team placed seventh, led again by its one-two punch of sophomore Marissa McPhail and junior Roxanne Sellick. McPhail, coming off her Hornet Jamboree title last week, placed 14th overall with a time of 21:12. McPhail's performance on Saturday now ranks No. 1 all-time in Fresno State's 6K top-25 marks.
Sellick also was outstanding, finishing 17th overall with a time of 21:12. Sellick also moved up to second all-time in Fresno State's 6K top-25 list. Senior Meredith Hawkins was 25th, junior Briana Cleary was 36th and sophomore Jennifer Hernandez was 38th. All three moved up on the all-time 6K list as well.
"I thought we ran very well for our first 6K meet of the year," Gonzales said. "It was a tough course. There were some small hills and it was a little muddy due to the wet weather. Jennifer Hernandez actually lost a shoe and finished the race with just one."
At the CS Bakersfield Invitational, the women took second place, led by Renee Winston. Winston finished ninth overall with a time of 21:29 in the 5K race. Erica McCoy followed with a time of 21:34, good for 10th place.
Shayla Duran annd Tierra Hilliard also ran well for Fresno State. Duran posted a time of 21:45 and a 11th place finish, while Hilliard came in 12th with a time of 22:14.
Both teams will be back in action in two weeks at the UC San Diego Invitational.
