Cross Country Has Strong Showing at Cal Poly Invitational
The Fresno State cross country teams took fourth and fifth place at the Cal Poly Invitational on Saturday, Oct. 13. The men's team finished fourth with 141 points and the women's team finished fifth with 131 points.
Host school Cal Poly took first place in both the men's and women's team competitions. In the men's race, Cal Poly won with 48 points. California took second place with 93 points and Southern Utah took third with 103 points. Junior Roberto Vaca (Sanger, Calif.) was the top placer for the `Dogs for the first time this season. Vaca took 11th place with a time of 27:35 in the 8K race. Junior Roosevelt Cook (Oakhills, Calif.) finished second on the team, 20th overall, with a time of 27:55. Junior Josh Roddy (Manteca, Calif.) was third on the team, 27th overall, at 28:10. In his first top-5 team finish, sophomore Curtis Barela (Hinkley, Calif.) took fourth on the team and 37th overall with a time of 28:20. Junior Alex Mason (Alameda, Calif.) finished fifth on the team and 46th overall with a time of 28:34. In the women's team competition, Cal Poly won with 43 points. Track West (a club team) took second place (54), Southern Utah took third (91) and Cal State Northridge took fourth (109). Junior Olga Gutierrez (Visalia, Calif.) was Fresno State's top placer. Gutierrez took fifth place in the women's 5K with a time of 18:45. Sophomores Kara and Michelle June (Santa Maria, Calif.) took 17th and 18th place overall. Kara June finished one second ahead of her older sister at 19:36. Junior Stacy Esquivel (Visalia, Calif.) took fourth place on the team and 39th overall with at time of 20:20. Senior Rachel Bauer (Clovis, Calif.) finished fifth for the Bulldogs, 52nd overall, with a time of 20:46.
