COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - After celebrating one of its greatest years on the playing field, the Fresno State Athletic Department capped it in equally impressive fashion in the classroom.

In an announcement by the Mountain West Conference office Monday, 86 Bulldogs claimed Academic All-MW honors among Fresno State's 12 winter and spring sports.

The Bulldog baseball and swimming and diving teams led the way with 17 honorees, and the other sports' tallies follow - men's track and field (9), women's basketball (8), women's tennis (7), men's golf (6), softball (6), men's tennis (5), women's golf (5), women's track and field (5) and men's basketball (1).

Among those teams, the combined list of Bulldog honorees included 19 seniors, 26 juniors, 19 sophomores and 22 freshmen.

To be eligible for selection, student-athletes must have completed at least one academic term at the member institution while maintaining a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or better, and be a starter or significant contributor on their athletic team.

Including the Bulldogs' 43 fall sports honorees from cross country, football, soccer and volleyball - a total of 129 Bulldogs earned Academic All-Mountain West honors in 2013-14.

    For comparison's sake, the `Dogs also topped the century plateau in 2012-13 (122), and likewise on Academic All-WAC lists in 2011-12 (142), 2010-11 (132) and 2009-10 (142).

Not included in this season's count were seven more All-Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Scholar-Athlete honors for the lacrosse team for their +3.0 GPA's - Meghan Macaulay, Jordyn Frew, Marcy Levatino, Meganne Weissenfels, Sophia Aragon, Anjelica Fuccillo and Holly Cisneros.

Overall for the winter and spring of 2014, a total number of 897 student-athletes from 11 MW member institutions were honored - a new league record that bettered the 783 spring semester honorees from the 2010-11 academic year.
