FRESNO, Calif. - The Fresno State men's and women's cross country teams were selected to finish seventh and eighth, respectively, in the 2013 Mountain West Coaches' Poll. Defending champion New Mexico was the coaches pick to win both the men's and women's titles.
Seniors Olivier Bernard and Danny Vartanian return as the top men's runners for the 'Dogs. Bernard finished the 8K Mountain West Championship run in 25:05.21 to finish with the top Fresno State time and 20th overall. Vartanian finished in MW Championship run in 25:31.19 to finish 30th. The senior duo were the top-two placers in every race for the `Dogs last season.
The women return senior Saylah Barserian, who finished last year's MW Championship with the team's top time of 22:14.34 which was good for 33rd place overall. The Clovis native finished with the `Dogs top time in three of six races. Junior Lyndsie Etherton also returns after winning the 5K Hornet Jamboree and placing fourth in the 6K Sundodger Invite. Those were the only two races that Etherton ran in 2012 due to injury.
Fresno State opens its 2013 campaign on September 14th at Woodward Park for the Fresno State Invitational. It will be the first meet the `Dogs have hosted since the WAC Championships were in Fresno in 2006.
The 2013 Mountain West Cross Country Championships will be hosted by the Air Force Academy at the Eisenhower Blue Course on Friday, Nov. 1.
