Bulldogs Face Top Teams in California
Sept. 7, 2011
FRESNO, Calif. - After opening the season last weekend in Nevada, cross country is preparing for the 2011 Sacramento State Hornet Jamboree this Sat., Sept. 10. The race will be held in Sacramento, Calif. at Sacramento Granite Regional Park.
"The training has been going really well for both men and women, so we are really excited to get up to Sacramento this weekend to race some of the top teams in California," said head coach Sean McManus.
Fresno State's cross country team finished second and third last weekend in their season opener at the 2011 Chase Race in Rancho San Rafael Park. Both the men and women's cross country competed strongly last weekend at Nevada, but McManus feels this weekend is a better opportunity to compete.
"The Nevada Chase Race was a good event, but an unconventional format. With the runners starting in 30 second waves based on ranking we weren't able to utilize the pack-running tactics we wanted to, so this weekend's traditional race format will give us a chance to work on that for the first time in competition," said McManus.
After placing second at the Chase Race in Reno, the Western Athletic Conference named Eric Battles the Men's Cross Country Verizon Athlete of the Week Tuesday for the week of Aug. 29-Sept. 4. It was the first WAC Athlete of the Week honor given for the 2011 season.
With a start like that, the season looks promising for Battles and the rest of the team.
