FRESNO, Calif. - After opening their season with the Fresno State Invitational -- the first home race since 2006 -- the Fresno State Cross Country teams will make the trek to the Bay Area on Saturday, Sept. 28 to run in the 40th annual Stanford Invitational at the Stanford University Golf Course.
The men will run an 8K beginning at 9:50 a.m. and the women will follow that with a 6K starting at 10:30 a.m.
The Fresno State men will look to build off of the strong start they had at Woodward Park, where they finished second with 61 points. Senior Danny Vartanian finished fourth with a time of 19:58.7 in the four-mile race. His four-mile time is still the top time in that distance this season in the Mountain West. Chriss Grimble and Kevin Poythress also joined Vartanian in the top ten to help contribute to the second-place finish. Vartanian, the senior from Buchanan High, had the best performance of any returning men's runners at last year's Stanford Invite when he finished 43th with a time of 25:22.
Annemarie Schwanz leads the women team after her fourth-place finish at the Fresno State Invitational. The sophomore finished the 5K race in a time of 18:19.3 to help the Bulldogs finish third with 58 points. That finish came in just her second career race after only running in the MW Championships as a freshman. Saylah Barserian joined Schwanz in the top ten by placing 10th with a time of 19:00.7. She had the top finish on the women's side at Stanford last year with a time of 21:57 to finish 40th.
The Stanford Invitational will also give the Bulldogs another chance to run against MW-rival San José State. Both teams finished ahead of the Spartans in the team standings at the Fresno State Invitational two weeks ago.
The weather forecast calls for sunny skies with a high of 81 and a low of 53 and 11 mph winds on Saturday in Palo Alto.
