Fresno, Calif. - The Fresno State cross country teams are making their second trip to Sacramento, this time to run in the NCAA West Regional Meet at Haggin Oaks Golf Complex on Friday, November 15. The men will run against 31 teams, while the women will compete against a field of 37 teams.
The men will run a 10K race beginning at 10:30 a.m. The women will follow that with a 6K, set to start at 11:45 a.m.
Sophomore Annemarie Schwanz, who earned second-team All-Mountain West with her 11th place finish at the conference championships two weeks ago, figures to be towards the front of the large field of runners. She has been the top finisher for the `Dogs and has finished 11th or better in every race this season. Schwanz has set school records in the 5K and 6K this season.
Seven of the 37 women's teams are ranked in the USTFCCCA National Top 25, including the nation's top team, Arizona.
The men will be led by seniors Danny Vartanian and Kevin Poythress. One or the other has been the top finisher for Fresno State in every race this season. The `Dogs have counted on a strong group of five to run tight together to score as low as possible. That group also includes junior Chriss Grimble and freshman Matt Kwiatkowski and Cooper Gill.
Five of the 31 men's teams are ranked in the Top 25 poll. Oregon is the highest ranked team in the West region, coming in at No. 4.
Weather on Friday in Sacramento is expected to be in the 60's with mostly sunny skies and very little wind.
