Steve Pearse joined the Bulldog coaching staff in the summer of 1992 after previously serving as an assistant coach at Cal. He serves as bench coach in addition to working with the infielders and assisting Mike Rupcich with the hitters.

At Cal, he was the first base coach and worked with the infielders. During his tenure, Cal went 35-28 and won the NCAA East Regional, advancing to the College World Series.


Pearse spent three seasons as an assistant coach to his father, Tom, at Laney College from 1989-91. During his three seasons at Laney College, they shared a Golden Gate Conference championship in 1989 and advanced to the state Junior College playoffs all three seasons.

In the summer of 1990, he was an assistant coach for the Anchorage Bucs, which won the Alaska League championship.

Pearse was a two-year letterman from 1987-88 at Fresno State, capping his career by earning third-team All-America honors as a second baseman for the team that set a school-record 56 wins and advanced to the College World Series. He finished his career at Fresno State with a .363 batting average; .338 in 1987 and .381 in 1988.

In 1988 he had 111 hits which ranks third all-time in a season in Bulldog history . He also set single-season school record for assists by a second baseman (207) in 1988. That year the Bulldogs equaled the third-longest winning streak in NCAA Division I history by winning 32 games in a row.

He started all 68 games in 1988 for the Bulldogs, who reached a number one ranking in both major top-25 polls. In addition to earning third-team All-America honors as a senior, he was also named first-team All-District 8, first-team All-PCAA and Fresno State’s Most Inspirational Player.

Pearse was inducted into the Fresno State Baseball Hall of Fame in 1994. He and his wife, Melissa, have a daughter, Mikayla. Pearse was born December 25, 1997 and earned his bachelor’s degree in physical education from San Francisco State, where he attended school from 1987-88. He played the 1988 season with the Montreal Expos’ minor league affiliate in Rockford, Ill. He holds a master’s degree in health/physical education/recreation from Saint Mary’s College.
