Box Score

Fresno, Calif. - Bulldog Baseball started their home opener well, playing a tight game with the UCLA Bruins through four innings, but defensive miscues would be Fresno State's undoing as four errors led to three unearned runs in a 7-4 loss Friday Night.

Junior Ryan Penn was the starting pitcher for the Bulldogs, and didn't pitch badly, going 4.1 innings while allowing five hits and only two earned runs, but would take the loss.

The Bruins would get on the board first, as a single from Eric Taylor, and the first of the Bulldogs errors would combine to allow for a run in the second inning. Fresno State would even the score in the bottom half, however, after a Beau Mills double would lead to some small ball for the Bulldogs, ending in a run after a Moresi RBI.

The Bruins would open up the doors in the fourth inning, putting together four runs off of Ryan Penn and Eddie Romero, and adding three more in the seventh.

The Bulldogs would answer back again. Finally knocking out UCLA starter Hector Ambriz, the Bruin Bullpen would come out wild and walk in three runs, and kept the bases loaded for the Bulldogs. The big hit just didn't come, though, and UCLA would get out of the inning.

From there, UCLA handed the reins to their closer, Adam Simon, who would finish the game, allowing no hits and striking out four over 2.1 innings pitched.

Hector Ambriz would pick up the win for the Bruins. He pitched 6.0 innings, allowing three hits and two runs while walking four and striking out eight.

The Bulldogs get their next chance at the Bruins on Saturday at 1 p.m. That game will be the second in a three-game series against UCLA. Sophomore Brandon Miller will take the hill for the Bulldogs, against Bryan Beck of UCLA.
