Box Score

Fresno, Calif. - Fresno State won their second straight series Sunday, beating No. 11 Pepperdine 8-3. Starting pitcher Andy Underwood went the distance, allowing eight hits and three runs while striking out five in a commanding performance. The Bulldogs grabbed an early lead and continued to swing the bat well at key times, putting eight runs across on nine hits.

Fresh off of an exciting ninth-inning win in the previous contest, the Bulldogs got off to a fast start as leadoff hitter Steve Susdorf was beaned to open the game, and scored when a Kent Sakamoto double just missed clearing the wall in left center, caroming of the top of the fence and allowing Susdorf to score cleanly. The Bulldogs added two more runs in the third with some good fortune. Erik Wetzel and Susdorf both walked to begin the inning, and the two batters moved around the bases. Wetzel advanced to third on a deep fly from Kent Sakamoto, and Susdorf stole second to give Fresno State two runners in scoring position. Pepperdine starter Adam Olbrychowski thought to get out of the inning when Nick Moresi swung at strike three, but the pitch got away from Chad Tracy, curving around the backstop and allowing both Wetzel and Susdorf to score.

Fresno State scored two runs in the next two innings as well. The fourth started with a ground-rule double by Beau Mills, and after the inning was extended by an error from Waves first baseman Justin Tellam scoring Mills, Steve Susdorf took advantage, blasting the first of his three hits on the day to right field scoring Wetzel. After surrendering one run in the top of the fifth, the Bulldogs extended their lead when Frank LoNigro singled to left with Nick Moresi and Christian Vitters in scoring position to get a 7-1 lead.

That cushion was more than enough for starting pitcher Andy Underwood. Underwood, entering the game with a 1-0 record, came in dominant, using only 50 pitches to get through the first five innings, and was in control through the early innings. Throwing just 108 pitches through the full nine, Underwood scattered 8 hits, allowing three runs, two earned, and striking out five on the way to the win.

The Bulldogs added one more run in the eighth, when Steve Susdorf hit a solo home run to right field, his second of the series and fourth of the year. Susdorf finished the day 3-for-3, reaching base all five times he came to the plate, scoring three runs and driving in two runs.

Fresno State returns to action this Friday, when the Bulldogs host the Utah Valley State Wolverines in a three game series starting at 6:35 p.m. on Friday, followed by afternoon games beginning at 1:05 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday.
