Fresno State Struggles Again Against Fullerton Pitching In 9-0 Loss
Feb. 13, 2005
Fullerton, Calif. - Fullerton left-hander Ryan Schreppel was almost as good as his teammate Ricky Romero, holding the Bulldogs without a hit until the seventh inning as the Bulldogs lost their second game to the Cal State Fullerton Titans on Sunday afternoon. Fresno left-hander Eddie Romero kept the game close, holding a 1-0 lead through six innings, but Fullerton would again put together runs in the late innings to defeat the Bulldogs. The game started off as a classic pitcher's dual. Left-handers Eddie Romero and Ryan Schreppel got through the first inning in four batters each, and Schreppel would get through the top half of the inning in order. The Titans got their first run in the second, after Brett Pill hit a double off of the wall and scored on a RBI single from Neil Walton. The Titans threatened to score in the middle innings off of Fresno State starter Eddie Romero, but the team would work out of bases loaded jams in the fourth and fifth innings. Matt Garza came in for the Bulldogs in the sixth, but the Fullerton bats would come alive. Garza hit the first batter he faced, and after Neil Walton hit his second hit with a single, the Titans had two runners on. A single from Blake Davis added a run, and Brandon Tripp hit a two run double to give Fullerton a 4-0 lead. Fullerton would continue to add runs, finally finishing the game with nine after scoring three more in the seventh and two in the eighth. Even with the offensive success, the story of the series was the Fullerton starters, who allowed only two hits in 15 innings pitched. Fresno State returns to Beiden Field next weekend for a three game series against Santa Barbara Gauchos. Those games will be held at 6:30 p.m. on Friday and at 1 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday.
