Baseball Drops Series Opener to No. 11 Stanford, 4-1

PALO ALTO, Calif. - Stanford junior right-hander John Hudgins threw 7.1 innings of no-hit baseball and limited Fresno State to a run over eight innings to help lead the Cardinal to a 4-1 victory over the Bulldogs Friday at Sunken Diamond.

The Cardinal improved to 4-5 while the Bulldogs dropped to 1-4, losing their fourth in a row.

Hudgins (2-0) faced two batters over the minimum through the first six innings allowing two walks. Fresno State junior outfielder Tory Davis broke up Hudgins' no-hit bid with a one-out single in the eighth. After a Kyle Atrat strikeout, sophomore infielder Aaron Kempster lined a pinch-hit single to right putting runners at first and third. Junior infielder Ryan Haag laced an RBI double to left to place runners at second and third. Hudgins stopped the rally by striking out junior infielder Chris Patrick.

Stanford took a 1-0 lead in the third inning on a Carlos Quentin RBI single off Fresno State starter Josh Glynn (0-2). Outfielder Sam Fuld led off the frame with a double and advanced to third on a fly out by infielder Brian Hall setting up Quentin's run scoring hit. The Cardinal tacked on two runs in the seventh and one in the eighth highlighted by John Mayberry Jr.'s second homer of the year.

The Bulldogs and Cardinal continue the three-game series Saturday at 1 p.m.
