Baseball Loses Fifth Straight to No. 11 Stanford, 5-2

PALO ALTO, Calif. - Stanford infielder Jed Lowrie lined a two-out RBI single in the sixth inning to snap a 2-2 tie and help lead the Cardinal to a 5-2 victory over Fresno State Saturday at Sunken Diamond.

The Cardinal improved to 5-5 while the Bulldogs dropped to 1-5, losing their fifth in a row.

With two outs in the sixth, the Cardinal strung together three straight singles capped off by Lowrie's go-ahead hit of Fresno State starter Cody Smith. Smith (0-1) took the loss, allowing three runs on six hits over 5.2 innings.

Fresno State struck first with a run in the second courtesy of a Brandon Marcelli sacrifice fly. The Bulldogs added another run in the third on an RBI double by Casey McGehee off Stanford starter Tim Cunningham. Cunningham was lifted with one out in the third for David O'Hagan (1-0) who limited the Bulldogs to one hit over 4.1 innings while retiring ninth straight at one point.

Mark Romanczuk pitched the final two innings to earn his second save of the series and the season.

Ryan Garko clubbed a two-run homer in the eighth to cap the scoring for the Cardinal.

Chris Patrick led the Bulldogs at the plate going 2-for-4 with a run scored.

The Bulldogs and Cardinal wrap up the three-game series Sunday at 1 p.m.
