IRVINE, Calif. - The Fresno State baseball team found itself in another pitching battle Sunday afternoon, but fell this time 1-0 in game three of its series versus UC Irvine at Cicerone Field. Despite the loss, the Bulldogs won the series, taking two of three to open the 2014 season on the road.

Freshman Jimmy Lambert (0-1) made his Division I debut on the mound for the 'Dogs and worked against redshirt senior Evan Brock. The San Dimas, Calif. native pitched five and two-thirds innings, struck out four, walked two and allowed the games sole run in the bottom of the sixth.

For the Anteaters, Evan (1-0) went seven innings, striking out six, allowing three hits and two walks. Sam Moore earned the save.

The 'Dogs were in scoring position just two times in the pitching battle. Trent Woodward led the second inning with a single and advanced to second via groundout. The Bulldog greatest chance to put a runner across the plate was in the sixth inning when Chris Mariscal smacked a lead-off double to left field. He advanced to third base on a sacrifice bunt by Jake Stone, who also picked up his first Division I start. The momentum came to a halt though, a pop up and ground out left Mariscal stranded at third.

UC Irvine capitalized in bottom of half of the inning that the Bulldogs could not. Starting with a lead-off single in the sixth by Justin Castro to the left side, too far for Jesse Medrano to haul in and fire to first base in time. Castro accounted for half of the `Eaters six hits (3-for-3). Chris Paulino registered his only hit of the game (1-for-4) to push Castro across the plate for the games one run.

The Bulldogs would reach base just once more, a single in the eighth by Mariscal. He finished 2-for-3 with a walk.

Fresno State returns back to Beiden Field on Tuesday for its home opener against Grand Canyon at 6:35 p.m. The 'Dogs face Sacramento State a day later, Wednesday, in part of its nine-game homestand.
