UC Irvine Tops Fresno State, 5-3
Feb. 17, 2004
FRESNO, Calif. - Danny McCarthy hit a pinch-hit RBI single in the top of the seventh inning to break a 3-3 tie and lift UC Irvine to a 5-3 win over Fresno State Tuesday at Beiden Field.
The Anteaters improved to 3-2 on the season and snapped a three-game losing streak to Fresno State who fell to 3-5 on the year.
McCarthy 's go-ahead hit proceeded a leadoff single by catcher Jordan Szabo and a sacrifice bunt off the bat of pinch hitter Daniel Miramontes. The Anteaters added an insurance run in the ninth on Kyle Ryckeboscch's first home run of the season.
Fresno State sophomore righthander Rudy Quinonez (0-2) pitched a career high tying 3 1/3 innings and struck out two but gave up Szabo's leadoff hit in the seventh to pick up the loss.
The Bulldogs took an early 2-0 lead in the bottom of the third on junior David Gomez' two-run double. However, UC Irvine answered with three of its own in the top half of the fourth on a three-run homer by Erik Johnson. The round tripper was his first of the season.
Fresno State senior infielder Kyle Wilson led off the sixth with his second home run of the season to knot the score at three.
UCI reliever Steve Schroer (2-1) notched his second win of the season tossing 2/3 scoreless innings. Blair Erickson hurled the final three frames, scattering two hits and three walks while striking out four to register his second save of the season. Erickson walked the bases loaded in the bottom of the ninth with one out but struck out Wilson and freshman infielder Christian Vitters to preserve the victory.
The Bulldogs continue their homestand Friday when they play host to California for the first of a three-game set. First pitch is slated for 6:30 p.m.
