Bulldogs Drop Series Opener to California, 16-4

FRESNO, Calif. - Paced by a 21-hit attack including seven for extra bases, California defeated Fresno State 16-4 Friday at Beiden Field. The 21 hits and 16 runs are the most allowed by the Bulldogs this season.
The Golden Bears improved to 6-4 on the season and have now won the last three in a row and eight of their last nine against the Bulldogs who fell to 3-6 on the year.
Seven Golden Bears notched at least two hits for the game led by a pair of four-hit performances from infielder David Nicholson (4-4) and outfielder Brian Horwitz (4-5). Nicholson had a pair of doubles and singles highlighted by run scoring singles in the fourth and seventh. Horwitz also doubled and singled twice with three being run scoring hits. Outfielder Chris Errecart (2-5) clubbed a two-run homer to left in the sixth to tally his second round tripper of the year. Criag Allen (3-4), Justin Nelson (3-5) , James Holder (3-6) and Jordan Karnofsky (2-3) also turned in multi-hit games.
Cal starter David Padgett (1-1) scattered two runs on six hits and three walks while striking out a career high seven over six innings to earn the victory.
Bulldog starter David Griffin (1-2) yielded five runs (two earned) on six hits and a walk over 3.1 innings to pick up his second straight loss.
Fresno State sophomore outfielder Richie Robnett socked his first career home run with a two-run blast to right field in the seventh inning. Robnett also singled to register his team-leading fourth multi-hit game of the season.
The series continues Saturday at 1 p.m. Cal righthander Adam Gold (2-0, 1.04) is scheduled to oppose Fresno State sophomore righty Michael Cooper (0-0, 4.15).
