    FRESNO, Calif. - For the third consecutive year the Fresno State baseball team opened the season with a win. The Bulldogs (1-0) defeated Gonzaga (0-2) Saturday night 10-4.

    The Dogs scored 10 runs on 11 hits. Preseason All-WAC shortstop Garrett Weber was 4-for-5 on the night with a home run and three singles. He also recorded an RBI.

    The Fresno State offense started out hot with seven runs and six hits in the first inning.

    The Bulldog pitching staff had a total of 10 strikeouts and allowed seven hits.

    Gonzaga struck first with one run in the first inning taking an early 1-0 lead.

    The Dogs answered scoring seven runs in the bottom half of the inning. Senior Jordan Ribera hit a single to second base that brought in the tying run. The Bulldogs continued the inning with back-to-back bunts from Austin Wynns and Chris Mallory increasing the lead 3-1. Fresno State piled on four more runs and headed into the second inning with a 7-1 lead over the Zags.

    The Dogs got out of a bases loaded jam in the top of the second inning after turning a 6-4-3 double play.

    Fresno State added a run in the bottom of the second when Mallory flew out to right field allowing Weber to cross home plate. The Dogs led Gonzaga 8-1 after two innings.

    In the third inning, the Dogs scored another run as the lead grew to 9-1 over Gonzaga.

    After allowing a run in the first inning, starting pitcher Derek Benny threw four scoreless innings and struck out six batters. He allowed only two hits in five innings. In the fifth inning, Benny struck out back-to-back batters to end the inning. He earned his first win of the 2011 season.

     

     

    Gonzaga scored three runs in the top of the sixth inning and heading into the bottom half of the inning, the Zags trailed 9-4.

    Redshirt freshman J.D. Salles threw four innings of relief Saturday night. He struck out four batters and in the top of the eighth inning he struck out the side. Salles earned his first career save after throwing three scoreless innings.

    Weber hit the first home run of the season for Fresno State in the bottom of the eighth inning as the Dogs led 10-4.

    The Bulldogs won the game 10-4 over the Gonzaga Bulldogs.

    The Dogs continue opening weekend on Sunday, Feb. 20 at 6:05 p.m. against Oregon State.
