FRESNO, Calif. - Five different Bulldogs notched hits in Fresno State's 4-0 loss at CSU Bakersfield Wednesday night, including junior Daniel Moultrie who is on a five game hit streak. The Bulldogs (3-2) were unable to get past a Roadrunners defense that made extraordinary plays all night.
Freshman Garrett Mundell made his first collegiate start and picked up his third strikeout of the year to end the second inning. The Lake Forest, Calif. native held the roadrunners hitless for 3.2 innings before Bakersfield rallied and scored two runs in the bottom of the fourth.
Fresno State ended the rally by catching Bakerfield's DC Legg as he attempted to stretch a single to left into a double. Mundell would leave the game having pitched four innings, given up two runs on three hits and struck out two of the 14 batters faced.
Sophomore Tyler Stirewalt made the second appearance of his career in the bottom of the fifth replacing Mundell. He pitched for a single inning and picked up his first collegiate strikeout before junior Justin Haley took over on the mound in the bottom of the sixth inning and kept the Roadrunners off the board.
In the top of the 7th inning, freshman Chris Mariscal walked and moved to second on a ground out by junior Justin Charles. Moultrie then bunted to advance Mariscal and beat out the throw to put runners on the corners with one out. The Roadrunners defense battled back, throwing out Moultrie on a steal attempt and striking out the next batter to get out of the jam.
With two runners on, Bakersfield scored its third run of the game on a hit to center field in the bottom of the eighth. A fielding error on the same play allowed a second run to score, pushing the Roadrunner's lead.
Down 4-0 at the top of the ninth inning, Mariscal led off with a single to left field. But the Bulldogs were unable to rally and dropped their second game of the season.
Mundell (0-1) received the loss.
The Bulldogs will stay on the road at Pepperdine (Feb. 24-26) before returning home Feb. 28 against UC Santa Barbara. Fans can purchase season and single-game tickets online or by calling the Bulldog Ticket Office at 559-278-3647.
