FRESNO, Calif. - Despite persistent rain throughout the day, the Fresno State Bulldogs and UC Davis Aggies were able play game one of their four-game series Friday night.
In the end, the Aggies were able to pull out a 4-2 victory behind a solid start by Eddie Gamboa (1-0), who worked effectively to quiet the Bulldogs' bats. Fresno starter Justin Wilson (0-1) took the loss for the Bulldogs.
Things looked good early for the Bulldogs as first baseman Ryan Overland launched a towering home run over the right field wall for the early lead. But Bulldogs batters saw little time on base after that, as they managed only 4 hits in the game.
Fresno State also struggled defensively, committing two errors that eventually led to two unearned runs for the Aggies. A third unearned run came in the ninth inning after a Danny Grubb passed ball.
The Bulldogs had a couple of scoring chances late in the game against the Aggies but were unable to come through with the clutch hits.
Saturday's scheduled double-header between the Bulldogs and Aggies has been moved up to a noon start, with the second game beginning approximately 30 minutes after the end of game one.
Saturday will also be a historic day for Bulldogs baseball as Fresno State baseball legends Dick Ruthven and Tom Goodwin will have their respective jersey retired and remembered on the left field wall of Beiden Field. The ceremony is scheduled to take place between games one and two, or at 4 p.m. if rain should cause game cancellations.
"Join the State - Fresno State!" - The Fresno State baseball team continues their weekend home series against UC Davis in a doubleheader on Saturday, February 23 beginning at 2:05 p.m. and a single game Sunday, February 24 at 2:05 p.m. Tickets can be purchased online at www.ticketmaster.com, by phone at (559) 485-TIX, in person at the Bulldog box office or at Beiden Field on game day.
