FRESNO, Calif. - The Fresno State baseball team lit up the scoreboard with a seven run sixth inning that propelled them to an 11-9 win at Beiden Field Sunday afternoon. With the win the 'Dogs sealed the three-game series sweep of Nevada to start Mountain West Conference play undefeated, and move to 6-2 overall on the young season.
"It feels good," said head coach Mike Batesole. "These guys have been around long enough to know this is a long haul, but certainly we're going to go home and feel good about this."
Entering the bottom of the sixth the Bulldogs trailed 5-2 and owned just four hits, three of which were registered in the first inning that led to their first two runs put across the plate. All nine position players for the 'Dogs saw the batter's box in the sixth while four saw the box twice. In all, Fresno State posted five hits and was assisted by two errors that led to its seven runs in the frame. The Bulldogs owned a 9-5 advantage after the action packed inning.
Nevada plated two in the eighth to close the gap to two, but the Bulldogs would answer with two more of their own to extend the lead back to four.
With a save on the line in the ninth, LHP Dillon Houser entered the game with two on board and one out. The freshman needed just 11 pitches to retire two and earn his first Division-I save.
Junior RHP Garrett Mundell (1-0) earned his second career win out of the bullpen, while Tyler Wells (0-2) took the loss.
Fresno State is back in action at Beiden Field on Wednesday to take on Bakersfield at 6:35 p.m.
