FRESNO, Calif. - Fresno State (3-3) could not come back from a slow start at Pepperdine Friday afternoon. A run in the bottom of the eighth boosted the Waves to a 3-2 win in game one of the three game series.

Three Bulldogs finished with multiple hits. Juniors Justin Charles and Trent Garrison went 2-for-3 and 2-for-4, respectively. Freshman Jordan Luplow also finished 2-for-4 and had a double, the second of his career.

The Bulldogs had a rough first inning, giving up two runs and one hit with three errors.

Luplow started a rally in the fourth on a double down the left field line. He was moved to third on a single to center by sophomore Aaron Judge. Garrison swung away on the first pitch and sent a single through the right side, scoring Luplow for his fifth RBI of the year.

With the tying run on second, Pepperdine's Jon Moscot escaped the jam by striking out the next two batters.

The Bulldogs defense took back the momentum, retiring the first three batters for Pepperdine in the fourth.

Charles started off the fifth with a single through the right side. He advanced to third on a double to left center by Daniel Moultrie. The shot extended Moultrie's hit streak to six games.

A sacrifice fly to left field by senior Patrick Hutcheson scored Charles and tied the game at two-all before the Waves got out of the inning.

Great defensive plays kept Pepperdine off the board for six straight innings.

Senior Taylor Garrison came in to replace Tyler Linehan with a runner on second after he picked up his sixth strikeout of the afternoon for the second out. Taylor gave up a hit to the first batter he faced, moving Miles Silverstein to third base. Silverstein would score the go-ahead run on a wild pitch by Garrison.

Despite both runs scored in the first inning being unearned, Linehan (1-1) was charged with the gamewining run and the loss. He went 7.2 innings without giving up an earned run while on the mound, or walking a batter, and now has a 0.59 ERA on the season.

Fresno State continues its series with the Waves tomorrow, Feb. 25 at 1 p.m.

The Bulldogs return home Feb. 28 to face UC Santa Barbara and then No. 2 Stanford, Mar. 2-4. Fans can purchase season and single-game tickets online or by calling the Bulldog Ticket Office at 559-278-3647.
