Bulldogs Fall in Tight Game, 3-2

SANTA CLARA, Calif. - The Fresno State (5-10) baseball team trailed early 3-0 in the bottom of the first inning before Ozzie Lewis seized one run in top of the fifth and seventh in a 3-2 losing battle against Santa Clara (9-9) Wednesday night at Stephen Schott Stadium.
Justin Wilson (2-1, 2.76) and the Bulldogs found themselves in a little bit of trouble when the Broncos loaded the bases on base hit single and two walks in the bottom of the first inning. The first runner advanced home on a wild pitch and the next two scored when Ryan Conan singled through the left side leaving the Bulldogs down 3-0. Fresno State retired the next two batters on a ground out and a deep fly ball to right field.
In his second at of the night in top of the fifth inning right fielder Lewis hit a double to left field, advanced to third on a Danny Grubb ground out and scored the first run of the night on a wild pitch. The Bulldogs jumped on the board with one run at 3-1.
On the first pitch and first swing in the top of the seventh inning Lewis hit his first home run of the year to left center and only left the Bulldogs trailing by one.
Three pitchers entered the game in the first three innings for the Bulldogs only allowing four hits. The starting pitcher Wilson allowed three runs on two hits in one inning pitched. Clayton Allison relieved Wilson in the second inning and allowed two hits in one inning. Tanner Scheppers appeared in the third inning throwing six innings and allowing three hits and striking out three batters.
Fresno State attempted to tie and score one run in the top of the ninth when Jason Hershfield walked in the first at bat. Pinch runner Gavin Hedstrom advanced to second on an error on a pick off attempt and advanced to third on a ground out by Brian Lapin.
Ozzie Lewis tallied two hits and two runs in four at bats on the night in the 3-2 loss to the Santa Clara at Stephen Schott Stadium.
The Bulldogs were held to two runs on four hits while Santa Clara compiled three runs on six hits.
Fresno State will be back at Beiden Field to take on San Diego in a three-game series with the first pitch on Friday at 6:05 p.m. The following two games will be on Saturday and Sunday at 1:05 p.m.
