SEATTLE - On an unusually sunny February afternoon in Seattle, the Fresno State baseball team earned its fifth win of the season. The Bulldogs beat Washington, 3-2, in the final game of the series. The `Dogs won the series, 2-1, and are 5-2 on the season.
The Bulldogs hit seven home runs against Washington. Junior Jordan Ribera led the way with three home runs this weekend. He now has six home runs in seven games. Ribera is hitting .429 with two doubles, six home runs and 10 RBIs.
The `Dogs defense turned an impressive five double plays against the Huskies. The team has a total of 10 on the year.
Sophomore Kenny Wise hit a solo home run in the second inning and the Bulldogs take an early lead, 1-0.
In the fourth inning, Ribera hit a solo shot well beyond the outfield fence of Husky Ballpark. The `Dogs increase their lead, 2-0. The Bulldogs have hit a total of 12 home runs in 2010.
Left-hander Josh Poytress got the starting nod from head coach Mike Batesole Sunday afternoon. The sophomore threw a career-high five and third innings. His previous career-high was his last outing against Nebraska.
Poytress struck out three Husky batters and allowed only one earned run. He earned his first win of the season and is 1-0.
Catcher Trent Garrison hit a double to shallow left center field in the fifth inning. Third baseman Garret Weber got base hit to left field bringing home Garrison and Fresno State extends their lead, 3-0.
Washington got on the board in the fifth inning scoring one run trailing, 3-1. The Bulldogs turned their ninth double play of the season to retire the side and left two runners stranded.
Sophomore Cody Kendall came out of the `Dogs bullpen in the fifth inning striking out two Washington batters. He picked up his first save against the Huskies.
The Huskies scored a run in the bottom of the ninth inning trailing, 3-2.
The `Dogs came away with the win taking the series, 2-1.
