FRESNO, Calif. - Junior right hander, Clayton Allison threw six innings only allowing two runs on eight hits in a Fresno State (7-11) victory against No. 16 San Diego (13-7) by a score of 6-2 Sunday afternoon at Beiden Field.
The Bulldogs scored two runs back-to-back in the fifth to take a one run 2-1 lead and sixth inning to take a two run lead 4-2.
San Diego jumped on the board in the first inning with one run on two hits leaving the score at 1-0.
With the bases loaded the Toreros scored their second and final run of the day when Logan Gelbrich singled through the left side.
Adding extra insurance runs Fresno State brought in two more runs adding one in the seventh and eighth inning with a final 6-2 score.
Fresno State had 10 hits on 31 at bats on the day while San Diego had 11 hits on 36 at bats.
The Bulldogs had a good weekend going 2-1 against the No. 16 ranked team in the nation.
"The game was important for our team and to get a win was a big step to get it going in the right direction," said head coach Mike Batesole. "It was a good weekend. We played good defense and were fundamentally sound on the field."
Starting pitcher Allison had three strikeouts and three walks in six innings.
"Things didn't go our way yesterday but you have to keep grinding it out," said Allison. "It feels pretty good winning two games against the No. 16 team in the nation."
Second baseman Erik Wetzel went 3-for-3 on the day with three singles, two RBI's and two walks.
Third baseman Tommy Mendonca went 2-for-3 with one double, one single and one RBI.
Fresno State will play at home against Santa Clara with the first game at 6:05 on Friday and the following two games on Saturday and Sunday at 1:05.
