DAVIS, Calif. - The Fresno State baseball team jumped out to an early lead over the Aggies and never looked back earning the 12-4 win over UC Davis. The Bulldogs are 7-1 on the season and continue the three-game series against the Aggies tomorrow at 1:00 p.m.
The Dogs tallied 15 hits in the opening game of the series against the Aggies. Four different bulldogs recorded multiple hits and senior Danny Muno led the way with three hits in five at-bats.
Hitting was contagious for the Bulldogs in the second inning. The Dogs batted around the lineup totaling six runs on six hits to take the lead.
Fresno State hit a season a season-high six doubles against the Aggies. Preseason All-WAC selection Brennan Gowens hit his first double of the year. Freshman Aaron Judge and junior Dusty Robinson each added a pair of doubles. Catcher Austin Wynns hit his second double of the season. Designated hitter Kenny Wise recorded his second triple of the year and the Dogs hit a total of seven extra base hits on the night.
The Aggies got on the board in the first inning with a two RBI single from left fielder Scott Lyman. The Dogs headed into the second inning trailing UC Davis 2-0.
The Bulldogs answered back in the top of the second inning scoring six runs. The inning was jumped started by back-to-back doubles down the right field line from Gowens and Judge. Judge recorded an RBI with his hit and the Dogs trail the Aggies, 2-1.
Muno came to the plate with the bases loaded to continue the top of the second inning. The third baseman hit a single to right field allowing two runs to score. Garrett Weber hit a single up the middle as the Dogs added another run increasing their lead to 4-2.
The second inning stayed alive with a sacrifice bunt bringing in another Bulldog run. Junior Dusty got his first hit of the game with a double to right center field which allowed Weber to score and the Dogs lead grew 6-2 over the Aggies.
Friday ace Derek Benny sat down the Aggies batters in order in the bottom of the second inning.
UC Davis scored one run in the bottom of the third inning and trailed the Bulldogs 6-3.
Muno recorded two stolen bases against the Aggies and has five on the season. He has 42 stolen bases in his career and needs one more to tie for seventh place in Fresno State history.
In the fifth inning, Robinson led off with a double to left field. Gowens reached base after getting hit by a pitch. Judge doubled to center field bringing a run and advancing Gowens to third base. The Dogs increase their lead 7-3 over UC Davis.
Junior Pat Hutcheson singled to the first baseman extending the fifth inning and allowing the eight run of the game to cross home plate. A wild pitch brought in another run and the Dogs led 9-3.
Benny pitched a season-high eight innings on the mound in his third start of the year. The righty struck out one Aggies batter. He has allowed six earned runs in a total of 20 innings pitched in 2011. Benny has a 3-0 record and an overall ERA of 2.70.
The Bulldog defense turned three double plays against the Aggies. Fresno State has fielded 10 double plays in eight games.
Muno led off the eighth inning with his third hit of the game, a single through the right side. He stole second base to put him in scoring position. Pinch hitter Kenny Wise blasted a triple over the right fielders head allowing Muno to score. Weber hit an RBI single to left field adding another run. A passed ball scored the run of the inning and the Bulldogs led UC Davis 12-3 heading into the bottom half of the eighth.
Freshman Tyler Linehan threw one inning out of the bullpen and struck out one batter.
UC Davis scored a run in the bottom of the ninth inning and the Dogs win on to win the first game of the series, 12-4.
"We Are Your Team!" The Bulldogs continue the series against UC Davis on Saturday, March 5 at 1:00 p.m. and Sunday, March 6 at 1:00 p.m. The Dogs return home to host CSU Bakersfield on Tuesday, March 8 at 6:05 p.m.
