FRESNO, Calif. - For the second night in a row, over 2,900 fans came out to support the Bulldogs against No. 1 Stanford (9-1) at Beiden field. But the Cardinal responded to their first loss of the season by defeating the Bulldogs 16-0 Saturday night.
Fresno State (5-6) saw three Bulldogs earn hits in the loss.
Junior Trent Garrison went 2-for-4 on the night. He is on a two game hit streak with two runs against Stanford. Senior Patrick Hutcheson and sophomore Jake Alvarez went 1-for-3 and 1-for-1 Saturday, respectively.
"I think we played hard and we got beat by a really, really good team," said head coach Mike Batesole.
Stanford's ace Brett Mooneyham held the 'Dogs hitless through five innings.
With two outs in the bottom of the sixth, Hutcheson bunted past Mooneyham towards second base and beat out the throw to first to end the no hitter.
Garrison followed on a 1-2 count with a single through the right side for his first hit of the day before the 'Dogs flew out of the inning.
Senior Cody Kendall (1-1) received the loss and Mooneyham remained undefeated at 3-0.
Gene Escat saw his first action on the mound this year. The super senior is the last remaining Bulldog who was a member of the 2008 National Championship squad. He gave up no runs in 0.2 innings pitched, striking out one.
Junior Austin Wynns caught the complete three hour contest through six Bulldog pitchers. With the series now tied, Fresno State is still looking to upset the top ranked Cardinal.
"Just sticking to the plan, working together as a team and coming out ready to go," said Wynns of the 'Dogs game plan. "Tomorrow is another day." Senior Thomas Harlan will start in the series finale Sunday afternoon.
"I like the way our pitching is set up," said Batesole. "Tom has been throwing the ball real well. And our bullpen is intact. [Taylor Garrison] hasn't thrown yet, so he'll be able to go six outs tomorrow and [Justin Haley] will be back. We haven't used [Tyler Stirewalt] yet, so on the mound, we're in pretty good shape."
The final game of the series begins at 1:05 p.m. (Mar. 4). Fans can still purchase season and single-game tickets online or by calling the Bulldog Ticket Office at 559-278-3647.
