`Dogs Tie Double Play Record

FRESNO, Calif. - On a sunny Fresno afternoon the Fresno State baseball team tied the record for most double plays fielded in a single game against Oregon. The Ducks won the game, 8-3, and the Bulldogs are 5-6 on the season.
The `Dogs turned a double play in the first four innings of the ball game. And in the ninth inning tied the school record for the most double plays fielded in a single game. The last time the Bulldogs turned five was in 1986 against Pacific and Washington State. The `Dogs have a fielded a total of 18 double plays this season.
The Bulldogs defense opened the game turning a 5-4-3 double play.
In the bottom of the first inning lead off hitter Muno hit a stand up double off the left field wall. Coyle hit an RBI single up the middle and the `Dogs take the lead, 1-0.
The `Dogs turned their second double play of the game to retire the second inning.
In the second inning, Oregon answered with a run tying the game, 1-1. Fresno State turned another double play to end the third inning.
Muno hit a single to second baseman and advanced second base on an error. Coyle knocked the ball to right field for his second RBI single of the game to give the Bulldogs the lead, 2-1.
For the fourth consecutive inning, the Bulldogs fielded a double play to end the fourth inning.
Sophomore Josh Poytress got the starting nod from coach Batesole on Sunday afternoon. In the fifth inning the lefty sat the batters down 1-2-3.
Poytress struck out three Oregon batters in a career-high six and third innings. He beat his previous career-high set lat week against Washington by an entire inning.
The Ducks tied the game, 2-2, scoring a run in the top of the fourth inning.
In the sixth inning, the Ducks scored a run taking the lead, 3-2. They added two runs in the seventh inning increasing their lead, 5-2.
Junior Greg Gonzalez entered the game in the seventh inning. He threw one and two-thirds innings striking out two Duck batters.
Oregon scored two more runs in the top of the eighth inning extending their lead, 7-2.
In the bottom of the eighth inning, sophomore Brennan Gowens reached first base on an error. Junior Jordan Ribera singled to the first baseman moving Gowens to second base. Designated hitter Kenny Wise hit an RBI single as Ribera advanced to third base and the `Dogs trail, 7-3.
Oregon scored in the top of the ninth increasing their lead, 8-3.
In the top of the ninth inning, Fresno State turned its fifth double play of the game.
The Ducks won the game, 8-3.
The Bulldogs face Santa Clara on March 9 at 6:05 p.m. in Beiden field.
