March 8, 2004
FRESNO, Calif. - Sophomore righthander Matt Garza and freshman righty Ryan Ponce combined on a six-hit shutout of Chicago State in a 12-0 Fresno State win on opening night of the 26th Annual Pepsi/Johnny Quik Classic Monday.
The Bulldogs won their second straight to improve to 8-12 on the season while the Cougars remained winless on the year with an 0-9 mark.
Making his second start of the season, Garza (2-1) established career highs in strikeouts (six) and innings pitched (7.0) to earn his second win of the year. Garza held the Cougars hitless through the first four innings before surrendering a leadoff single infielder Derrick Bass in the fifth and scattered three hits and walk over his outing. Ponce hurled a career high two innings in relief to wrap up the victory.
CSU starter Paul Darby (0-3) was touched for five runs (four earned) on nine hits and four walks while striking out seven over 5 2/3 innings to suffer his third loss of the year. Elliot Reyes was 2-4 to lead the Cougars at the plate.
Three Bulldogs notched three-hit games including senior infielder Ryan Haag (3-5) and freshman outfielders DeAndre Miller (3-5) and Nick Moresi (3-4). Haag doubled twice and scored two runs including Fresno State's season high tying five-run outburst in the eighth. Miller singled three times including two-run base knock in the seventh. Moresi collected one of the club's three triples on the night and socked his first collegiate home run with a two-run blast in the sixth. The hit totals for Moresi and Miller were both career highs.
The three triple was one shy of tying the school's single game record set on April 23, 1952 against Sacramento State.
Fresno State plays host to Portland Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. on the second day of the Pepsi/Johnny Quik Classic. In the day's opener at 10 a.m., Monmouth squares off against Dallas Baptist while BYU and Chicago State face each other in a matinee tilt at 1 p.m.
